Savory salads reign supreme in Kendall Square!

Kendall Square is a happening place with plenty to see and savor. Thanks to Kendall Square’s array of restaurants, bakeries and cafes, this truism extends to salads. That’s right, Kendall Square is home to amazing salads that teem with fresh, local goodness and the spirit of innovation. Walk any street in Kendall and chances are that you’ll find a bountiful harvest of delectable salads. We’re sorry that we can’t list them all, but here are some of our favorites.

 

The Friendly Toast’s Port William Salad

 

Breakfast or brunch? That’s usually the question at the Friendly Toast. Thanks to the simply delightful Port William, which marries fresh lettuce and baby spinach with heaping slabs of smoked salmon and an accompanying adornment of reverie (aka, goat cheese, flavored  roasted pecans, green peppers, cucumbers & scallions), we’ll stick with salad. Summer never tasted so good.

Catalyst’s Roasted Beet Salad

 

The chef/owner of Catalyst set out to create a place that celebrates the simple things in life by serving “locally grown organic produce and wild and farm raised food from sustainable practices.”  It all begins with this transcendent starter that builds off sweet and toothsome beets roasted just so, then adorned with sinfully delicious goat cheese mousse and savory marinated mushrooms and then finished with flecks of Upland Cress and a one-of-a-kind pistachio biscotti. A feast for the eyes and the senses.

West Bridge’s Black Tuscan Kale Salad

 

Perhaps you’ve had enough of the so-called “Kale craze” (which dates back as far as 2011.) Sure, you love the so-called “super food’s” nutritional wallop (one cup of kale delivers fiber; calcium; magnesium; Vitamins A, C, and K; iron and antioxidants) but is there really a Kale dish that raises this green to the ethereal? YES!!!!!!!!!!! West Bridge’s salad—abounding with tangy gooseberries, flecks of mind-melting duck confit and refreshingly tart watercress — is foodie manna.

Tatte Bakery & Cafe’s Crunchy Halloumi Salad

 

What’s not to crunch in this fun, flavorful salad? Carrots, radish, apples, sesame and sliced toasted almonds give this dish a crisp crack of excitement while sweet raisins, refreshing mint, verdant and parsley deliver balance.  But my, oh my, the hunks of salty, savory and creamy Halloumi cheese piled atop the deliver a  lovely flavor that must be tried.

Aceituna’s Tabboule Salad

 

This staple of the Middle East diet—from Istanbul to Jerusalem to Beirut—shines with simplicity. At lunchtime favorite Aceituna, the formula – chopped fresh parsley, chopped fresh tomatoes, diced onions, and cooked bulgur wheat seasoned with extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice—is perfect anytime of the day.
