Alfred Vaz, Senior Vice President of Facilities and Operations at Vertex Pharmaceuticals: Alfred joined Vertex as a founding employee in 1989. Mr. Vaz is a member of senior management planning for Vertex Operations, which includes corporate real estate, facilities, space planning, engineering, procurement, health & safety, security, travel and general operations to support the company. In addition to the Cambridge facilities, his group also manages Vertex operations at sites in San Diego, CA and Washington, DC as well as international sites in the UK and Canada. Mr. Vaz has 27 years of experience in the biotech industry. He started at Biogen in 1983 where he spent 5 years in the Safety & Laboratory/Facilities Services Group. He also worked for Millipore prior to joining Vertex in 1989. Dan O’Connell, President and CEO of the Massachusetts Competitive Partnership: Dan O’Connell is the President and CEO of the Massachusetts Competitive Partnership, a public policy group made up of Chief Executive Officers of the largest private employers in Massachusetts. He has worked in federal, quasi-public and private institutions in Boston and Washington, DC. He served as Secretary of Housing and Economic Development for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 2007 to 2009, and as Chair of the Massachusetts Life Science Center.
